Compound is where pooled lending onchain started: the protocol that first let a deposit earn from the block it landed and a borrow price itself against a live pool, and it has run continuously since 2018 through every market DeFi has had.

Its third version trades sprawl for discipline. Each market is built around exactly one borrowable asset, so lenders in a market are exposed to one kind of debt and nothing else, and the collateral behind it is held apart where no other borrower can touch it. Rates come off a published curve, every asset carries a supply cap, a collateral factor, and a liquidation line set in public, and the whole account reduces to a single balance that is either earning or owing. It is lending stripped to the parts that can be audited.

The design is clean; holding a position in it is not. The borrow rate that doubles when utilization crosses the kink in the curve. The collateral that sat comfortably inside its factor until the market moved overnight. The rewards accruing in a token you keep forgetting to claim. The liquidation that does not wait for your morning. Compound keeps its books every block, and it grades the position, not the intention.

Every number Compound keeps about a position is a step in a plug: the rate on each side of the market, the utilization behind it, the price and liquidation line of every collateral asset, the reward balance accruing, how much more the market will lend. Supply, withdraw, borrow, repay, collateral moves, and reward claims run when a condition is met rather than when a person happens to be looking.

A borrow that closes itself when the rate crosses your number and reopens when it falls back. Collateral topped up before the factor is tested instead of after. Rewards claimed and put back to work on a cadence instead of a memory. Debt that unwinds in order, automatically, the moment the market says it should.

The positions that have done well on Compound across three versions and eight years are the ones that never depended on someone being awake, and that has never been more literal than it is now.
