Balancer generalized the AMM into programmable liquidity: pools of many tokens at any weights, a self-rebalancing index fund that pays you fees instead of charging them, running on Ethereum since 2020.

The architecture is the moat. Every pool settles through a single Vault, so all of Balancer's liquidity shares one balance sheet and swaps route across pools without tokens ever leaving the building. Weighted math holds a portfolio at its target allocation by letting arbitrage do the rebalancing, stable and composable pools handle pegged and yield-bearing assets with rate providers feeding live exchange rates into the invariant, and the gauge system directs BAL emissions by vote. It is the pool design serious structured liquidity gets built on.

The pool rebalances itself; your position does not. Gauge rewards accrue and wait for a signature. The pool token you staked represents a basket whose composition moved while you were not looking. Exiting into a single asset has a price impact that depends on the block you exit in, and the difference between a good exit and a bad one is timing you have to be present for. The invariant works every block; the human holding a claim on it works office hours.

Every number Balancer keeps about a position is a step in a plug: the pool's token balances, the supply behind your share, the rewards claimable in a gauge, and any one of them can decide what happens next. Joins, exits in proportion or into a single token, staking, unstaking, and reward claims run when a condition is met rather than when a person is awake.

Rewards claimed on the cadence that actually beats gas. An exit into one asset the block the pool's balance tips past your line. A position unstaked and unwound the moment the gauge vote moves the emissions elsewhere. A basket topped up from idle balances on a schedule you never have to remember.

The liquidity that compounds on Balancer is already run this way. Two depositors in the same pool earn the same fees; the one who claims, compounds, and exits by rule is the one who keeps them.
